MOVING YOUR MEMORY

How do I move my memory from ChatGPT to Claude?

Use Claude's experimental memory import: run its prompt in ChatGPT, then paste the result into Claude Settings, Memory on the web or desktop. It is available on every plan. This is separate from exporting ChatGPT chat history, which does not name memory as included. Check what Claude saved and edit any errors.

What are the steps from ChatGPT to Claude?

  1. See what ChatGPT holds

Open ChatGPT Settings, Personalization, Memory to view what it holds before you move.

Two parts: saved memories, which are stored separately from chat history, and reference chat history, which lets ChatGPT use relevant information from past chats. ChatGPT can decide what to remember, or you can ask it. You view and manage both in Settings, Personalization, Memory. OpenAI says features vary by plan, region, platform and workspace settings. 2. Export chat history if you want it

Use ChatGPT Settings, Data controls, Export if you also want chat history and account data. The link expires after 24 hours. This export does not name memory as included.

Settings, Data controls, Export data gives a ZIP of chat history and account data, ready within 7 days, with a link that expires after 24 hours from receipt. Available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu workspaces, not Business or Enterprise. Memory is not named as part of the export. OpenAI Help Centre: Exporting your ChatGPT history and data. 4. Check and edit what Claude saved

Open Claude Settings, Capabilities and review the result. Edit or delete entries that are wrong or no longer useful.

Memory from chat history is available on every plan, including Free; on Enterprise an owner allows it. You view and edit, pause or reset it in Settings, Capabilities. Incognito chats are left out. Claude Help Centre: Memory. Verified .

What does not move in this process?

A chat-history ZIP is not a documented memory export. Claude's source describes a prompt-and-paste import, not a transfer of your account or an exact copy of every chat. Do not assume that every detail moves; check the result.
