They overlap, and plenty of people want both, but they are not the same job and a tool built for one is rarely good at the other.

Can I keep both?
Yes, and plenty of people do. A notes application is where you think. A memory layer is what an assistant reads. They are not in competition.
Do PKM tools have AI memory?
Some have AI features. That is not the same as a memory an assistant of your choosing can read. The dated position for each of the main tools is below.
